What is it about?

Which is the better treatment for vestibular schwannomas? Surgery or radiosurgery?

Why is it important?

Because no randomized trial exists to answer this question, we searched through our large experience of treated patients with vestibular schwannomas to find pairs of patients who were similar in every detail except how they were treated. Short of doing a prospective trial which would be extremely difficult, this kind of analysis - called a matched cohort comparison - has one of the better chances of answering the question about which treatment is better for these patients.

Perspectives

The article is unique in showing one of the largest experiences in treating patients with vestibular schwannomas by a single surgeon who did both the microsurgical resections and the radiation treatments with radiosurgery technique.
