What is it about?
This article is a quantitative and qualitative analysis based on archival footage of news broadcasts during the 2005 French banlieue riots, dubbed by the government a "national security crisis." After documenting and analyzing dominant news frames (the contexts, causes, solutions, and other emphases for which the riots were presented), theories of cultural racism are used to analyze the findings at a larger cultural, social and political level. The finding is that racism was frequently apparent in the broadcasts.
