What is it about?

Most university anthropology departments have a website. These websites use images to represent what anthropology is about and what anthropologists do. We surveyed images used by 100 high-ranking universities. We found that they often reduce anthropology to 'exotic' places and peoples - representations that are now very out-of-date.

Why is it important?

Anthropology is often poorly understood by the public - and anthropologists complain about this. The internet is one of the main ways that people can learn about what anthropologists do. If a picture says a thousand words, we need to know what websites are saying about anthropology. And, we argue, what these pictures are currently saying needs to be changed.

Perspectives

We began this article after we both noticed that, when we visited anthropology departments' websites, we were seeing the same kinds of images repeated - and none of these images actually represented the work that we do as anthropologists ourselves.
