What is it about?

Nepal is an agricultural country, however in some part of Nepal people donot have sufficient crop production to sustain their own living. Drought is one of the reason for this. However, we donot have any scientific drought monitoring system in Nepal and lack of drought studies. In this article drought assessment has been done in far and mid western region for the last 30 years using meteorological datasets.

Why is it important?

This study is very importent to know about the drought affected and not affeted area in far and mid western region of Nepal. Frequency of drought occurence and drought severity in the last 30 years period has been shown. This will help farmers to better prepare for drought and also for policy makers for better policy preparedness.

Perspectives

This study is the first step towards drought assessment in Nepal using temperature and precipitation datasets. However, these findings will not be able to represent the whole area. Due to insufficient meteorological stations we are now planning to enchance our study using satellite data as well.
