What is it about?

This methods paper provides a broad overview of the practical and philosophical aspects of mixed-methods research to help those planning and conducting mixed-methods studies. It outlines the philosophies of and on-going debates about mixed-methods as well as practical issues, such as (a) the particular mix and order of quantitative and qualitative methods; (b) the way of integrating methods from different philosophical stance; and (c) how to synthesise mixed-methods findings.

Why is it important?

Too many beginning scholars select a mixed-methods approach without considering the strength and weaknesses of such mixed-methods apoproach. Remember all methods have their own inherent strengths and weaknesses. Also since we can combine different quantitative and qualitative methods at one time not all mixed-methods research is the same!

Perspectives

We felt there was a need for a mixed-methods paper highlighting some of the key issue we had come across in various previous studies and reviewing papers for academic journals.
