What is it about?

Motivated teachers put a lot of energy in helping their students to learn. In this article, we discover that even though salary is a key motivating element, the set of teachers with higher salaries did not show high motivation level as those with lower salaries. Importantly, the factors in the learning environment, plus how much support teachers get from administrators, also have impact on teacher motivation and student achievement.

Why is it important?

Education managers need to consider all the factors that make teaching and learning productive. Giving teachers monetary incentives alone does not solve all teaching/learning problems. To improve outcome, teachers should participate in school improvement, and the government should be willing to address other inadequacies in the learning environment..

Perspectives

I discovered that students' and teachers' perception of the others' access to teaching or learning materials are higher than they indicated it to be themselves. On motivation, it is interesting to find that even though teachers are poorly paid in Nigeria, most of those that participated in this study said they were happy to continue teaching.
