What is it about?

Infertility is caused by deficiencies in either partner.Although In Vitro fertilization (IVF) has become popular for treatment of Infertility it is a very costly treatment option with a very low success rate. IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is a procedure where sperms from the male are placed directly into the uterine cavity with a catheter. Success rates are comparable to IVF and hence should always be offered as the first choice of treatment in infertile couples

Why is it important?

Intra uterine Inseminations is a low cost treatment option which does not require sophisticated and expensive Laboratory set up. All clinicians can perform this procedure after a basic training and does not have a steep learning curve. IUI can be repeated for 4-6 cycles and the overall cost would not be one-tenth of IVF. It has a good success rate and a non surgical procedure

Perspectives

I feel that IUI is the lifeline for infertile patients belonging to the lower socio economic group who are unable to afford even one cycle of IVF. In my view, unless really indicated all patients should be given offered Intra Uterine Insemination for at least six cycles before opting for IVF
