What is it about?
The paper explored (a) the circumstances surrounding unexplained deaths of Nepalese migrant workers in Malaysia and (b) potential contributing factors. In the absence of medical autopsy, we conducted a verbal autopsy study of 57 friends, room mates, and relatives of 40 Nepalese nationals who had died unexpectedly in Malaysia. The circumstances surrounding sudden deaths among Nepalese migrant workers in Malaysia suggest a potential contribution from cardiovascular risk factors, lifestyle behaviours, and adverse working conditions.

Why is it important?
Reducing this burden of disease in migrant workers (not just those from Nepal) needs targeted health-promotion interventions, improved prevention and management of cardiovascular risk factors, stronger occupational health protections, and measures to prevent the production and consumption of counterfeit alcohol.
Perspectives
This is a great example of a working equal collaboration of researchers based at UK universities and research agencies: Green Tara Nepal and the North South Initiative (NSI) based in Malaysia.
