What is it about?

The paradigm in cosmology appears to be shifting. This topical review paper describes eight major problems with the current standard model that require a major overhaul, not merely simple modifications to address growing tension with the data. The issues emerge not only from disagreements with the data, but also from inconsistencies with fundamental theory, including quantum mechanics, particle physics and general relativity.

Why is it important?

We are learning about the properties of the Universe at a breathtaking pace with the help of groundbreaking observational programs. But the standard theory is not keeping pace with these developments. This paper brings to a focus the areas where new ideas and understanding are desperately required in order to bring cosmology in line with what nature is revealing to us.

Perspectives

We've known about the growing tension between cosmological theory and observations for quite some time, but there is no denying that the discordance appears to be at a breaking point now. I see this as a real opportunity of bringing the discussion to a focus by highlighting all of the major problems together, as I have done in this topical review.
