What is it about?
This randomised controlled study looks into the incidence and outcomes such as morbidity and mortality, ICU and hospital stay of patients undergoing bypass surgery from the effect of postoperative atrial fibrillation which is the commonest complication of coronary artery bypass surgery.

Why is it important?
This study which is prospective in nature confirms the existing facts about the deleterious effects of postoperative atrial fibrillation after bypass surgery although the ultimate aim is to assess the possible mitigating factor - tocotrienol, an isomer of vitamin E - which will only be analysed when the study is unblinded in the end.
Perspectives
This study took three years to be completed despite the COVID-19 pandemic and whether or not the antioxidant tocotrienol helps prevent atrial fibrillation after bypass surgery will only be known after the study is unblinded.
