These methods also allowed the researchers to determine the colony-forming units (CFU), which indicate the extent of bacterial contamination. The findings revealed that all flower samples carried significant bacterial populations, with contamination levels varying among different flower species. Gram staining showed predominantly rod-shaped, pink-stained bacteria, suggesting the presence of Gram-negative bacteria. The study discusses how environmental factors such as airborne dust, contaminated water, insects, nectar composition, and flower surface characteristics influence bacterial colonization. Overall, the article concludes that fresh flowers can act as reservoirs of potentially harmful microorganisms if they are not handled hygienically. The authors recommend proper washing, clean storage conditions, safe transportation, and improved sanitation practices to reduce microbial contamination. The study emphasizes that maintaining flower hygiene is essential not only for preserving their quality but also for minimizing the risk of bacterial transmission to humans and animals, particularly in places where flowers are handled extensively during religious and public gatherings.
