What is it about?
This article identifies key problems in the current social organisation of care work and examines them as problems of justice through the lens of Amartya Sen's capability approach. First, the precariousness of many social services professions and the widespread time pressure that contradicts the professional ethos of these employees are analysed. Second, the de facto primary responsibility of women for unpaid care work is identified as a central socio-economic driver of gender inequality. The article then explores how social structures of employment and care must be changed to address the deficiencies of contemporary capitalism and foster a more caring society.
