Chinese Families and Their Encounter with the Secular: An Ethnographic Study of Chinese Parents and Their Children in Edinburgh

What is it about?

This paper explores the religious beliefs and practices of Chinese immigrants living in Edinburgh. More specifically, using interviews with Chinese parents and their children, this paper shows how even though Chinese immigrants self-identify as secular, they nevertheless engage in what this paper will argue are religious beliefs and practices. This paper will also demonstrate that there exists a generational difference: Chinese parents in this study typically believe that they are fully secular in their beliefs and practices, whereas their children see the issue as more nuanced.
