Finding Deuteronomy’s Law of Vows in the Mouth of Zerubbabel

What is it about?

This article argues (1) that there is a literary allusion from the early Jewish book of 1 Esdras to a law regarding vows in the book of Deuteronomy, (2) that the author of 1 Esdras used this allusion to favorably characterize one of 1 Esdras’s main characters, Zerubbabel, and (3) that this allusion to the law on vows has implications for how a certain vow in 1 Esdras, namely King Darius’s vow, is interpreted.
