What is it about?

The article is about the challenges standing in front of pulmonary physicians in the management of respiratory infections in the 21st century. A number of factors such as age, comorbidities, immune status, lifestyle, emerging viral infections with pandemic potential (pandemics), and antimicrobial (bacterial) resistance influence the incidence, clinical course, and treatment of respiratory infections. Knowledge of these factors is essential for the correct choice of therapeutic approach.T

Why is it important?

The article is a review pointing out the most important factors that influence the management of respiratory infections like increase of elderly population, obesity, diabetes mellitus, overuse of tobacco products. To these factors immunosuppression and polymorbidity should be added together with the occurrence of infections caused by new pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and the overuse of antibiotics. The exploration of these modulating factors is essential for the medical community in its fight with the respiratory infections.

Perspectives

Writing this article was an interesting work for me as the overuse of antibiotics is making difficult treating respiratory infections and there are a lot of factor that contribute to this overuse
