What is it about?

Evidence from DNA barcoding and morphology indicates that the eastern and western forms of Schilbe Intermedius in southern Africa are specifically distinct. We therefore resurrect the specific name given by W Peters (1852) of 'depressirostris' for the eastern species.

Why is it important?

Recognising this taxonomy allows for a better scientific appreciation of the distribution and biology of the two species in applied circumstances such as fisheries as well as allowing a more realistic assessment of the conservation status of each to be made.
