What is it about?

Labeobarbus species are endemic to Lake Tana. They are important both ecologically and socio-economically. We attempt to figure-out the effect of diversion weirs on diversity and abundance of the migratory Labeobarbus species. We found a reduction in diversity and abundance of the migratory fish and this was attributed to diversion weir construction. Therefore, we recommended optimal management strategies for sustainable conservation of the fish resources in the lake.

Why is it important?

This study is very important in two major ways: 1) these species are endemic and hence any unregulated anthropogenic activities are determinant to their survival, and 2) these species are among the most economically important species. Hence, a reduction in their abundance have a severe impact on the livelihood of the local fishers.

Perspectives

I hope this article is exciting. Because the way that development activities carried out in developing countries is not just a problem for politicians and managers to worry about their impact on biodiversity. Every development activities in the study area is in the expense of biodiversity like fish and the environment at large. This article attempted to show the effect of diversion weir construction on fish diversity and abundance.
