What is it about?

Monitoring bird populations in remote locations of difficult terrain can be difficult. We identify some surrogate measures of bird densities from the Fynbos Biome, using Distance Sampling, Occupancy Modelling and ringing capture rates.

Why is it important?

1. We focus on the endemic birds of the Fynbos, which are range restricted. Some are in decline due to climate and landscape changes. 2. We show ringing can provide information beyond mark-recapture or biometric data using standardized measures of effort.

Perspectives

This work was inspired by the late Phil Hockey, who was my supervisor at the start of this study, but died of cancer towards the end of my first year. This publication features in a memorial issue dedicated to Phil.
