What is it about?

The objective of this research is to analyze the maximum sustainable potential level (MSY) of grouper fish in Makassar Strait waters, South Sulawesi, covering production data and number of fishing trips used from 1998-2007. Fish catch data by type of fishing gear and fish species are standardized by fishing power index (FPI) approach to all types of fishing gear. Furthermore, sustainable potential estimation (MSY) using the Schaefer (1954) and Fox (1970) models is used. The results showed that grouper catching in South Sulawesi waters using fishing gear such as payang, dogol, seine net, ring net, drift gillnet, permanent gill net, trammel net, boat chart, step chart, fixed line, other fishing lines, sero, traps and other traps. With the Schaefer model (1954), the maximum catch effort (Fopt) is 17,1984,6149 trips per year, the maximum sustainable catch (MSY) is 85,992,30745 tons per year. The utilization rate in 2007 amounted to 583.5 tons with the capture rate of 73,355 trips. The Fox model (1970) is known to be the maximum sustainable catch effort (Fopt) of 124,984 trips per year, the maximum sustainable catch (MSY) of 1,551,927,677 tons per year. Based on the two estimation models, it is known that each addition of one unit of fishing effort will have an impact on reducing the value of grouper production.
