What is it about?
The wonderful kola (Buchholzia coriacea) is effective for the management of type 2 diabetes. Experiments with alloxan induced diabetic rats showed that incorporation of 2.5 % B. coriacea seeds improved nutrient utilization and the biochemical parameters that were already compromised because of the diabetic state of the experimental animals. The damage inflicted on the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas of the rats were repaired due to the intake of B. coriacea. This plant product was found to contain significant amounts of 9-octadecanoic acid (Z) (Oleic acid) (39.22 %) and 9,12-octadecanoyl chloride (Z Z) (Linoleic acid chloride) (>39%). These compounds would have contributed to its biological activity in the management of type 2 diabetes, Incorporation of B. coriacea is effective at 2.5 % and should not exceed 5 %.
