What is it about?
This study examines the arguments and mobilization strategies used by anti-abortion (pro-life) groups on Instagram during the 2018 debate over Argentina’s Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy (IVE) law. Researchers analyzed posts from the two most-followed anti-abortion Instagram accounts over 11 months, using content and discourse analysis. The findings show that while the two groups used different engagement approaches—one focusing on broad national outreach and the other on persuasion and stigmatization—both relied on traditional anti-abortion arguments, adapting them to Instagram without significantly changing their message. They also responded to pro-choice arguments using both text and images.

Why is it important?
This research is important because it shows how social media is used as a tool for political activism, particularly in highly polarized debates like abortion. It highlights how traditional arguments can be adapted for digital platforms while maintaining their core messages. Additionally, understanding these strategies helps reveal how social media influences public opinion and mobilization efforts in political and social movements.
