What is it about?

Online compound specific stable isotope measurements have been limited by instrument oven operating temperatures typically up to 300°C. Advances in system configuration, reactor and column materials, and fittings, can now be more fully exploited to undertake compound specific stable isotope analysis up to 430°C, opening up new opportunities for analysis of larger organic molecules such as intact triacylglycerides.

Why is it important?

Stable isotope analysis is important in authentication studies food analysis and often used for free fatty acids (and their methyl ester derivatives) liberated from parent triacylglycerides. Molecular and isotopic information is lost when the parent molecule is cleaved. This work shows that the parent triacylglyerides can be analysed intact, as can other relatively large organic molecules.

Perspectives

This innovative work arose from recognised potential in advances in instrument configuration, and advances in reactor a chromatographic column technology. Compound specific analysis was undertaken on-the-fly during a 4-day visit to the Bremen Laboratory.
