What is it about?

We present a 4 phase on-ice return-to-hockey progression to guide rehabilitation of athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). We also present accompanying off-ice strength and agility drills, including a lateral slide board progression. Finally, we present a brief case report of a collegiate club ice hockey player who successfully returned to sport after ACLR following the progression detailed in this clinical commentary. Online videos of on- and off-ice drills are included.

Why is it important?

Limited evidence exists regarding ACLR rehabilitation for ice hockey players, and the demands of hockey are dramatically different than other (field, court) sports.

Perspectives

The impetus for writing and publishing this article came from our experience treating and rehabilitation the ice hockey player presented in the brief case report. Always inquisitive, the athlete's questions and my thirst for knowledge led to a thorough literature review and, ultimately, development of the on-ice progression presented in this manuscript. Thank you for reading our work. I hope you find the article useful, and that it helps to inspire more (and higher quality) studies on this important area of research.
