What is it about?

Multifidi muscles contribute to spinal stability. Ultrasound imaging can be used to evaluate multifidi muscle activity with limb movements. This study evaluates the accuracy of multifidi muscle activity assessment in older adults versus younger adults.

Why is it important?

It is important to establish the repeatability of ultrasound imaging in various age-groups prior to using ultrasound imaging to assess muscle function in patient populations.

Perspectives

To date, the majority of studies evaluating the repeatability of ultrasound imaging have been done in younger adult populations. Given age-related changes in older adult muscle, it is important to establish reliability among older adults before using ultrasound imaging to evaluate muscle changes over time.
