Why is it important?

Anterior shoulder dislocations are traditionally reduced and placed in a marginally supportive sling in a position that may keep the pulled away anterior supportive structures from healing. This typically leads to chronic instability which is debilitating. Once a shoulder is chronically unstable, surgical stabilization may be the best solution. The key is keeping the shoulder from becoming unstable by facilitating healing and protecting healing structures until they are once again capable of providing stability.
