What is it about?
Etifoxine is a minor tranquillizer, usually well tolerated. A 77-y. old female suffered moderately intense secretory diarrhoea which started 3 w. after taking etifoxine 150 mg/d. Microscopic examination showed typical, diffuse lymphocytic colitis. Stools returned to normal within 3 w. after stopping the medication. Re-introduction led to relapse after 1 w. of more severe diarrhoea and colonic lesions. Diarrhoea vanished after 3w. and, 6 w. later rectal biopsy elicited a frank lessening of chorionic infiltration without changing of intra-epithelial lymphocytosis. A 3rd colonoscopy was not considered ethical.

Why is it important?
Etifoxine has never been blamed yet for drug-induced colitis.Imputability seem almost certain, taking in account relapse and improvement of microscopic examination. Moreover, microscopic normalization delay is poorly known.
