What is it about?
Operation of an inlet is crucial on performance of an airbreathing engine. In this study we are investigating the coupling of a ramjet inlet with a rotating detonation engine. Performance of the inlet was assessed with pressure measurements during rotating detonation engine operation in Mach 4 supersonic flow.

Why is it important?
Rotating detonation engine have been rarely studied experimentally in ramjet configuration. Rotating detonation ramjets offer significant advantages over conventional propulsion systems. They can be more efficient, more compact and simpler in construction. To summarise, they can potenatially enable cost-effective solution to supersonic flight.
Perspectives
This was a fundamental study on rotating detonation ramjets. Future work will involve development of a new prototype in practical configuration designed for future flight tests.
