What is it about?

The control system of spacecraft is designed to for some nominal conditions. However, uncertainties can cause the performance to deviate from the desired behaviour. It is important then to check/ensure that the performance stays within limits in the presence of disturbances. This paper presents an efficient verification of a spacecraft performance making use of polynomial chaos expansion. The results are compared to the standard Monte Carlo.

Why is it important?

Although the design of spacecraft control system designs is demanding, assessing the robustness of these system through the verification process takes up the majority of the overall development time and costs. Therefore, finding alternative more efficient approaches can results in significant time and money savings.
