What is it about?

A virtual vortex generator is an active flow control device, which can produce the same effects as the passive vortex generator on the wing. In this paper, the vortex-generator-type plasma actuator is used as the virtual vortex generator, and the flow control effects over the wing are discussed.

Why is it important?

A general vortex generator on the wing is a device to make the flow over the wing turbulent through the vortex generation. Then, the turbulent flow can delay the separation flow from the wing surface. However, the vortex generator becomes one of the reasons for the drag increase of the airplane. The virtual vortex generator can actively produce the same effect as the general vortex generator, resulting in no drag increase.
