What is it about?

Multi rotor turbines are turbine systems comprising several rotors in one structure. In our research we investigate on the aerodynamics of multi rotor systems using wind lens turbines. Wind lens turbines are spaced closely apart to observe their effect on each other’s performance.

Why is it important?

In wind tunnel experiments we could show that closely spaced turbines have an influence on each other’s power output. Increasing the separation gap, the total system power output exceeded the sum of the stand-alone turbines. Namely, in the closest spacing the cumulative power of all three turbines drops compared to the cumulative power of three stand-alone turbines.

Perspectives

Windlens is a new type of wind power system consisting of a simple ring structure that covers the blades causing greater wind to pass through the turbine and thus dramatically increasing a turbine's efficiency of capturing energy from the wind. A Windlens turbine can generate 2 to 5 times the power of an existing wind turbine. In addition to high power output, Windlens is quiet, safe and has a beauty that blends into the surrounding landscape. Multi-rotor system using Windlens is very prospective with power output performance, quietness and cost from the practical points of view. For the fluid dynamics, the interference of the flows around each turbine with brimmed diffuser placed closed vicinity is very important and complicated to challenge.
