What is it about?
During the simulator trails we investigated the effect of different wake vortex encounters on the controllability of different aircraft from small to large during their final approach and landing. The goal is to determine which separation distance between aircraft can be applied to ensure safe operations.

Why is it important?
The GRACE research flight simulator was used to simulate 6 different aircraft types with each type representing a specific wake vortex category. The simulator trails produced significant data for all 6 categories and provided evidence for justifying the new separation minima.
Perspectives
Once again we demonstrated the great value of performing human in the loop evaluations that produce data on the operational aspects from the cockpit point of view.
