What is it about?

Wake flow field behind a simple trapezoidal pitching panel has been captured using Stereoscopic PIV.

Why is it important?

Fish and other marine animals move through water far more efficiently than any man-made underwater vehicle. This fact inspires studying the mode of thrust generation by fish. It is important from the standpoint of UUVs and UAVs.

Perspectives

Conventional PIV measures velocity field in a 2D plane where as Stereoscopic PIV also measure the out of plane component as well. The PIV data has been volume-interpolated to capture the 3D wake downstream of the panel. The trapezoidal panel is a rough approximation of the caudal fin in a variety of fish species.
