What is it about?
The addition of physical diffusion can cure a well known numerical instability known as the carbuncle phenomenon.

Why is it important?
Many common numerical techniques for shock wave capturing generate false predictions of carbuncles; this paper poses a physics-based remedy.
Perspectives
My perspective is that including physical diffusion is a more reliable strategy for simulating blunt body re-entry flows. Yes, it can be computationally expensive. But for some problems, one must ask if one wants an inexpensive incorrect answer, or an expensive correct answer.
