What is it about?
Porous materials are investigated which are intended to be used for actively cooled heat shields of spacecraft re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. The thermal behaviour is analyzed mathematically and experiments are conducted to validate a newly developed model. The analysis is carried out for the candidante material Zirconium-diboride, an ultra high temperature ceramic. The developed model is further used to show the coupled behaviour between the solid and fluid phase for various cooling cases.
