What is it about?
Importance of further refinement of thermal relaxation and chemical reactions models for the direct simulation Monte Carlo method is analyzed through comparisons with infrared and ultraviolet emission data in strong shock waves. Effects that are found important for flow velocities over 5 km/s are energy disposal and equilibrium constant of N2+O exchange reaction. Little impact of model refinement was observed at lower velocities.
