What is it about?
Mitigation of sonic boom is a major barrier preventing commercial supersonic/hypersonic flights. In this study, the jet plume effects on sonic boom for hypersonic slender bodies are studied systematically for the first time. Unlike the low-supersonic flight conditions, we found that the jet plume from the propulsion system can significantly amplify the sonic boom signature by a factor of 2-3 at hypersonic flight conditions.
