What is it about?
This study investigates a lightweight structural design inspired by origami, specifically the Kresling folding pattern, to improve performance in aerospace applications. By using 3D printing, we created sandwich panels with an internal origami core and tested their behavior under bending and compression. We also ran computer simulations to understand how these structures deform. We also implemented the analytical model this origami based of sandwich structure to replicated compression. Our findings show that these origami-based sandwich panels can significantly reduce weight while still providing strong mechanical performance. This makes them especially promising for use in high-performance aerospace vehicles where both strength and low weight are essential.
