What is it about?
Turbulent boundary layers moving over the surface of hypersonic vehicles often interact with shock waves. This interaction causes low-frequency dynamics that may resonate with skin panels on the vehicle surface and cause large structural deformations. We show that (1) the low frequencies of turbulent shock wave-boundary layer interaction may induce significant structural deformations downstream of the interaction, (2) one-way coupling exists between turbulence and structural responses, and (3) boundary layer turbulence can induce significant structural deformations.
