What is it about?

This work presents measurements of liquid drop deformation and breakup time behind conical shock waves. A conical shock is generated by firing a bullet at Mach 4.5 past a vertical column of water drops. Results show that correlations develop with planar shock experiments do not correctly predict the breakup of liquid drops in this environment. However, low order models that account for the time history of force applied to a drop is able to accurately predict the deformed drop diameter.
