The airfoil analysis and design code XFOIL has dominated research and educational applications for over thirty years, but it is feeling its age, especially for new users. We present a self-contained, comprehensive exposition of the methods in XFOIL, and new contributions, in the design of a Matlab-based solver, mfoil.
