What is it about?
Up until recently, the supersonic mode has been thought to be negligible in hypersonic boundary layers due to its small amplitude. This work shows that if not accounted for in particular circumstances, the supersonic mode can actually be amplified comparably to Mack's 2nd mode. Future studies should use caution when using transition prediction methods relying on LST or PSE to study the supersonic mode, as the mechanism of its creation may not be thoroughly represented by these methods.
