What is it about?

Pilot Reports (PIREPs) are current weather-related reports filed by pilots that are available to the pilot population. PIREPs can increase the accuracy and timeliness of current and forecasted weather conditions and provide information to meteorologists who develop aviation forecasts. Automated speech recognition systems (SRSs) are developing and could be used to generate Pilot Reports (PIREPs). This study involved using an SRS to transcribe and submit PIREPs in three noise environments: low, medium, and high. Pilots were asked how likely they were to use such systems in these environments.
