Integrating Model-Based Systems and Digital Engineering for Crewed Mars Mission Planning

What is it about?

As crewed Mars landing missions become increasingly feasible with the rise of new technologies, a challenge in the education of mission planners exists: do space engineers need to learn Model Based Systems Engineering to adopt Digital Engineering? We present a methodology by which to integrate these two fields and demonstrate the benefits of doing so for a crewed Mars landing mission: (1) greater system simulation capabilities, (2) enhanced model fidelity, and (3) improved system understanding.
