What is it about?

This paper describes a study that used small-scale models to test how a helicopter lands on water (a maneuver called ditching). The main goal was to gather data to help certify large helicopters for safe operation over the sea; a special testing rig is built to ensure the tests were accurate, repeatable, and scalable to real-life helicopters. A key innovative part of the wavy tests was precisely timing the model's drop so it hit the water at exact points on the wave.
