What is it about?

We're developing a new in-flight sensing strategy, where the vehicle's own deformation is used to infer its aerodynamic state: the vehicle-as-a-sensor. In this paper we develop a way to efficiently place the sensors in the internal structure of the vehicle, considering that it flies in high-speed and, more specifically, hypersonic conditions. We also show a way of how to parameterize the aerodynamic pressure that the vehicle is under, such that it is possible to have a real-time in-flight model that goes from measured deformation to aerodynamic loads.
