What is it about?
This paper investigates the potential for hybrid-electric aircraft from the perspective of power mismatch, where a high power/weight electric system is used for hover and a more efficient but heavier system is used for forward flight. Optimal design characteristics were compared with conventional propulsion systems, showing the potential of hybrid propulsion for VTOL-capable, fuel efficient aircraft for slow forward flight speed and short hover times.
