What is it about?

For take-off and landing, jet aircraft rely on systems of wing flaps to maximize lift. Numerical simulations are a key part of designing these for optimal aerodynamic performance. This paper summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of the simulation methodology most commonly used in industry to predict aerodynamic performance in this challenging flow regime.

Why is it important?

This paper gives a baseline of the state of the art, circa 2021, of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) technology, without mesh adaptation, for solving flows around a realistic commercial transport aircraft with high-lift devices deployed.
