What is it about?

An airplane’s complex (mechanical) Fowler flap system that deployed during takeoff and landing, but protruded under the wings during cruise, lead to an increase in fuel consumption and lower emissions. A new flow-control approach was successfully tested in order to simplify the Fowler flap system (without any mechanical protrusion) and provided equal or better lift performance for the airplane.
