Impact of Design Constraints on Noise and Emissions of Derivative Supersonic Engines

What is it about?

Engines for use in new supersonic passenger aircraft can either be designed from scratch or can repurpose core components of existing engines that were originally designed for subsonic aircraft. Here, we identify the constraints imposed by the use of existing engine cores and quantify the impact of this design choice on the fuel consumption, noise, and pollutant emissions from supersonic aircraft. These results can inform policy makers as they develop updated environmental standards for new supersonic aircraft.
