What is it about?
The performance of several ionic liquids (or liquid salts) were characterized with a single electrospray needle. Beam currents were measured for calculation of thrust, specific impulse and propulsive efficiency.

Why is it important?
Ionic liquids have characteristics important to space applications: negligible vapor pressure and high electrical conductivity. Thus, they are an enabling propellant for electric thrusters operating at very high specific impulse (>1000 seconds). This paper reports the electrospray performance of eight ionic liquids. Depending on the ionic liquid, operation in the pure ionic regime, droplet mode and mixed ion/droplet mode were observed.
